Apple is planning an extreme sports Watch with a bigger screen and a metal shell

People who know about the plans say that the upcoming Apple Watch for extreme sports Watch athletes will have the biggest smartwatch screen to date, a bigger battery, and a more rugged metal case.

The rugged Apple Watch will have a diagonal screen size of almost 2 inches, while the new standard Apple Watch Series 8 will keep the same diagonal screen size of 1.9 inches as the current Apple Watch Series 7. The low-end Apple Watch SE is set to get an update, but the screen size will stay the same.

The larger display on the extreme sports model, which is expected to be announced with the other two models later this year, will have about 7% more screen space than the largest Apple Watch that is available now. The resolution of the screen will be about 410 pixels by 502 pixels, and it will still be as sharp as the current models.

Apple could use the larger screen space to show more fitness metrics or information on the watch faces at once. In watchOS 9, the company added several new fitness features, such as multisport workouts and better tracking of intensity during workouts.

Since it came out in 2015, the Apple Watch has become one of the most important pieces of hardware that Apple makes. The watch models are part of the wearables, home, and accessories division, which brought in $38.4 billion, or 10 percent of the company’s total revenue, in the last fiscal year. But the markets for smartwatches and fitness wearables are crowded, and Apple has to compete with companies like Google’s Fitbit and Samsung Electronics Co.

The extreme sports watch will be made of a strong metal instead of aluminum. It will also have a more shatter-resistant screen and a bigger battery than regular Apple Watches, so athletes will be able to track their workouts for longer. The people who said this asked not to be named because the watch details haven’t been made public yet.

The more durable Series 8 watch will be able to take a user’s body temperature to find out if they have a fever, just like the standard Series 8 watch. It will also make it easier to track things like elevation and data while swimming or hiking.

All of the new Apple Watches will use an S8 processor with the same performance as the S7 chip in the Apple Watch Series 7, which was the same as the S6 chip in the Apple Watch Series 6 from two years ago. This will be the first time in the company’s history that the Apple Watch has had the same general performance for three generations in a row.

A spokeswoman for Apple wouldn’t say anything about the company’s plans. Apple usually shows off its new watch models along with its new iPhones in September. The Cupertino, California-based company is planning to release four new iPhone 14 models in the fall, including new pro versions with faster chips and a 48-megapixel rear camera.

This will be the third time in the Apple Watch’s history that the size of the screen has grown. In 2018, with Series 4, and again in 2017 with Series 7, the company made the screen bigger. The rugged model will have one of the largest screens from a popular smartwatch maker, with a nearly 2-inch screen.

Bloomberg News first reported early last year that Apple was planning to add a rugged version of the Apple Watch to compete better with Garmin and other brands that make watches for extreme sports. The high-end watch is likely to cost more than the standard Apple Watch, which is made of stainless steel and starts at $699.
