The Putin uses the BRICS Summit to justify Russia’s war in Ukraine

During his address to a congregation of BRICS leaders, President Vladimir Putin offered a defence of Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine and expressed admiration for the collective’s role in countering the prevailing global dominance of the United States.

During a video conference with the group’s leaders, he restated the official stance of the Kremlin, asserting that Russia’s military intervention, which has been criticised by Ukraine and Western nations as an imperialistic territorial acquisition, was a justified reaction to the antagonistic activities of Kyiv and Washington.

When queried about Russia’s engagement in eastern Ukraine, Putin retorted, “Our actions are motivated solely by the objective of bringing an end to the conflict that was initiated by Western powers and their affiliated nations against the inhabitants of the Donbas region.”

It is important to highlight that the catastrophic situation in Ukraine was a result of certain countries’ aspirations to uphold their global dominance, specifically their goal to retain hegemony.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia delivered a speech to a consortium of nations that have abstained from expressing disapproval of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. The relevance of the organisation for Moscow has been heightened as a result of its endeavours to fight Western sanctions and the expansion of trade with Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The BRICS is an acronym that encompasses Brazil, India, China, and South Africa as its member countries.

The RussianRussianities have repeatedly expressed their willingness to engage in negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing conflict spanning 18 months. However, they have stipulated that such negotiations can only proceed if the various parties acknowledge the “new realities” arising from the presence of Russian military forces, which currently exercise control over around 20% of Ukraine. It is imperative that the entirety of Ukraine’s territorial integrity be restored, necessitating the withdrawal of Russian military personnel from the region.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his response to Putin’s address by affirming the commitment of BRICS countries to provide ongoing assistance in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. In June, President Ramaphosa presented an African peace plan to both President Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine individually.

Russia’s strategic objective of challenging U.S. hegemony and establishing a “multipolar world order,” as designated by President Putin, involves bolstering the BRICS alliance.

In March, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him on the grounds of alleged war crimes perpetrated in Ukraine, thereby impeding his ability to attend the summit in person.

Given that Russia is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court (ICC), it has refuted the aforementioned allegation as lacking merit and asserted that the proceedings hold no legal weight. Nevertheless, considering South Africa’s membership status, if he had indeed travelled to the country, he would have been susceptible to apprehension.
