Health Sciences Education

The Master of Education in Health Sciences Education enables healthcare professionals and clinical faculty to broaden their knowledge and skills. The degree delves into core theory in educational pedagogy, knowledge production, and interprofessional leadership, all of which can be utilized in the health care setting. The program is designed for working healthcare professionals in a variety of areas and can be finished in as little as two years of component study. This is a mixed, cohort-based program.

This is a component program developed for full-time health care workers and educators.

Entrance Requirements

Minimum entrance requirements for the Department are an undergraduate degree from the University of Alberta with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale, or an equivalent degree and standing from a recognized institution. The latest 60 hours of graded coursework performed, or the equivalent of two years of continuously graded coursework will be used to compute the admission GPA.

Candidates should also have prior teaching experience in a health-related field.

Applicants must offer proof of English language proficiency if applicable (refer to English Language Requirement). Any of the following will suffice:

  • A TOEFL score of 93 (internet-based) with a minimum of 24 in speaking and writing and 21 in reading and hearing, or equivalent;
  • A score of 7.0 on the IELTS with no band lower than 6.5;
  • A minimum CAEL score of 70 in all bands is required.

Applicants must also include a resume:

  • a Statement of Intent,
  • two letters of recommendation from people who are familiar with the applicant’s abilities and aptitude for academic work, and
  • a Curriculum Vitae.

The course-based program will be open to all applicants. Students may request a change in program category to a thesis-based approach after completing 24 credits of mandatory courses and talking with their advisor (s). A change in program category must be made by the conclusion of the second year of the program.

The deadline for applications is November 1st. The application deadline is May 31.
