Apple AirPods Pro 2: New Leak Points to Brilliant Upgrade

AirPods

The next AirPods Pro might be just around the corner. Most likely, the updated earbuds won’t be called AirPods Pro 2, but AirPods Pro second generation. We don’t know exactly what they’ll look like—there have been rumors, but no pictures have leaked—but we may have found out how they’ll be better than the ones we have now. It builds on a leak from earlier this year that said a change in the next release could change how well it works.

Joe Rossignol at MacRumors found a listing in a Bluetooth products database that said the next earbuds could have much better sound.

That’d be awesome. The current AirPods Pro already sounds great and blocks out a lot of background noise. But the database entry says that Bluetooth has been improved and lists it as Bluetooth 5.3, which, for reasons I can’t understand, seems to mean Bluetooth 5.2. It seems like Apple’s listings are often higher than what’s actually on the headphones.

It’s more advanced than what the current AirPods Pro can do, which suggests that Apple may add LE Audio support to the next in-ears.

So what does that mean?

There are several good things about LE Audio support. First, it has LC3, which stands for Low Complexity Communication Codec, according to The Verge’s brilliant Jon Porter. It’s supposed to be much more efficient, letting you get better sound quality at the same bit rate or slightly better sound at less than half the bit rate. This means that your battery will last longer.

With LE Audio, you can connect more than one pair of AirPods to one iPhone, among other things. Also, each AirPod left and right can have its Bluetooth connection to make sure the sound doesn’t get out of sync.

Will the next AirPods have this? It’s not Bluetooth Certain, but it’s worth noting that some of Apple’s other earbuds, like the Beats Studio Buds, may already be able to do this. In that case, those headphones might need a firmware update to make the sound better.

In short, the future looks bright for the next Apple earbuds, and they may be available in just a few days.
